Can Rose trust a man with a new face? David Tennant (Casanova, Blackpool, Quatermass Experiment, Harry Potter) steps into the role of the Doctor for the second series of Doctor Who. Following on from the phenomenal success of the first series, the second instalment is full of more thrills, more laughs, more heartbreak and some terrifying new aliens. The Doctor and Rose meet Queen Victoria, an evil race of Cat Women and the dreaded Cybermen.

After the gut-wrenching finale to the first year of Russell T Davies' new version of "Doctor Who", we were all on tenterhooks to see how new boy David Tennant would fill Christopher Eccleston's shoes as the itinerant Time Lord.

It was to be no disappointment, as this new, more fun-loving version of the Doctor leapt with gusto (and quotes from "The Lion King") straight into an even more assured second season. The success of the previous year gave the writers the confidence to really play with the format. So, old companions Sarah Jane and K9 reappeared in the tearjerking "School Reunion", clockwork robots menaced the court of Louis XV in the romantic "Girl in the Fireplace", and most bizarrely of all, Peter Kay got to play blobby alien the Abzorbaloff in the bonkers "Love and Monsters".

The sci-fi action was scarcely neglected either, with original series villains the Cybermen making a polished return throughout the season. And the show got a stab at outright horror in "Alien"-esque two parter "The Impossible Planet"/"The Satan Pit".

The regular cast continue to shine, particularly Billie Piper as companion Rose Tyler. They welcome new boy Tennant from the first, and special episode "The Christmas Invasion" establishes a chemistry that was to last the whole season.

It all builds to a heart in mouth conclusion that'll have you simultaneously on the edge of your seat and blubbing with tears. So welcome back "Doctor Who", the best fantasy show in the world!
